Lighting Design Tips for Every Room in Your Home

Great lighting design is not about buying expensive fixtures. It is about layering light correctly. Every room needs three types of light: ambient, task, and accent.

The Three Layers

Ambient lighting is the overall light in a room — ceiling fixtures, recessed lights, or large floor lamps. It should provide enough light to move around safely. Task lighting is focused light for specific activities — desk lamps, under-cabinet kitchen lights, or reading lights. Accent lighting highlights architectural features, artwork, or plants — track lights, picture lights, or LED strips.

Living Room

Start with a central pendant or ceiling light at 2700K for warmth. Add floor lamps in corners for reading. Use LED strips behind your TV or shelves for accent lighting. Dim everything on a single circuit or smart system.

Kitchen

Install under-cabinet LED strips at 4000K for food preparation areas. Use pendant lights over the island at 3000K for ambiance. Ensure the main ceiling light is bright enough (500+ lumens per square metre).

Bedroom

Keep it warm — 2700K maximum. Avoid overhead lights directly above the bed. Use bedside lamps with dimmer capability. Consider a warm LED strip behind the headboard for a hotel-like feel.

Bathroom

Mix colour temperatures: 4000K for the mirror area (accurate colour for grooming), 2700K for ambient bath lighting. Add LED strips under the vanity for a floating effect.

Home Office

Use 4000-5000K task lighting at your desk for focus and energy. Add a warm ambient light for video calls that illuminates your face without harsh shadows. Bias lighting behind your monitor reduces eye strain.
